Residents Settle Suit from Apex Explosion:
On the night of Oct. 5, 2006, an estimated 17,000 Apex residents fled their homes after a chemical fire and explosion broke out at a nearby hazardous waste facility.
The accident didn't lead to a major catastrophe - thanks to emergency responders and fortunate weather conditions - but it did quickly lead to a major class-action lawsuit.
Even though they ultimately suffered no physical harm or property damage, the plaintiffs claimed they were entitled to damages for the expenses, lost profits, inconvience and mental anquish they had suffered because of the accident.
After litigation the case for three years, their quest for relief ended Oct. 9, with U.S. District Court Judge W. Early Britt approving a $7.85 million settlement.
